Food – where the real money is made.

2016 goals: take more photos for this page!
Some prices may differ (*cough* have now increased)

Outside upper campus:

  • Unexplored. Go ask your med/med sci friends!

UPPER campus – The Pavilion:

Tropical Green Pho [1]Tropical Green (now called Pho House) is the Vietnamese eatery on campus, found next to Clancy Auditorium. It is directly upstairs from the Matthews Food Court.

Unfortunately 2016 has seen the prices increase by about a dollar, e.g from $8.50 to $9.50.

The beef noodles (who doesn’t love a bowl of Vietnamese Phở) is rather average I have to say. Don’t expect the quality that you would get outside, such as Riverwood or even Meridian (Hurstville etc.). But – if you have a craving to satisfy, you just can’t go past it 🙂

Pork/chicken rolls! I’ve seen people buy two at a time (or perhaps they’re just buying it for their friend too!?) Gone are the days of the under $5 rolls – they are now about $6.

Tropical House is closed during UNSW Graduation.

The staff are very friendly 🙂

Matthews food court

The Matthews Food court itself has a plethora of yummy choices, if you happen to be on this side of campus.

  • Salad is a popular choice… but methinks if I’m eating out, I’d rather something else. Pick from a variety of salads and soups. Soups come with a slice of bread (which is kind of a trademark).
  • Kebabs (idk)
  • Indian (idk)
  • Turkish (idk)
  • Asian noodles (mmm spicy laksa). Nice servings; big portion of noodles.
  • Free usage of microwaves for students in Matthews Food Court**

**

UPPER campus – Central Lecture Block (CLB):

There are three choices adjacent to the CLB, (in-between the library and quad):

  • Asian Fusion.
  • Subway. On the run? Grab a sub.
  • Boost Juice.

MIDDLE CAMPUS – QUAD Food Court:

  • Upstairs “Q lounge” $8.50 meat & potato lunch is on my todo list okay. It works by $8.50 for any two choices from: {pulled meats; chips; salad}, or pay large price for more choices. Would go for the meat+salad next time.

You eat too many chips whilst studying overseas in Australia, apparently.

    • The snack box – a packed styrofoam box of chicken/beef/both, with either salad/chips/half-half. Pick your sauce. Extremely popular.

  • Kebabs. Need to add extra $$ for taboulli.
  • Sushi (not as good as Asian Fusion?).
  • Burgers & Sandwhiches
  • Chinese (~$10 $11 for two choices with drink, without a drink it’s $9 $10 if you ask. Pretty average)
  • Pasta – one of my safe options 🙂

MIDDLE CAMPUS:

  • Mecanical Engineering/K17: Cafe. Greasy. I’ve got to try a burger, they look great.
  • The White House: Social eating. I went here with my bible study group. IMHO, pretty pricey for the quantity (we ordered a couple of pizzas), but I guess it’s “non-fast food” pizza – if anything, is a definite must to order hot chips!

Lower campus:

  • IGA apparently. They have hot food like chips and chicken. Sharing with friends is an option. Not really any veggies.
  • Someone take me to the roundhouse!

Pizza party:

  • Bulk ordering pizza – ideal for end of semester parties. During my first year, my *TUESDAY* Computing tutorial class ordered from Eagle Boys – tada cheaper Tuesday!
  • $5 large pizzas from Pizza Hut in Randwick – just a short walk away from Uni, walking up the hill.
  • Dominos Kensington, outside of lower campus. Anzac Pde. Walking distance – convenient for pick-ups for society events.
  • Right alongside the Dominos shop is Khing Thai (thai food). Opinions vary, depending on who you ask…

Outside lower campus (Anzac Pde):

FACT: 90% of Anzac Pde Kensington is Chinese food (we are talking around $11).

  • Nick loves McDonalds!
  • The tiny “Pork Roll” place you will walk past is rather mediocre. I think the chicken is just regular “BBQ chicken”. (IMHO skip it.) Seems like a family business!
  • Time for Thai (aka TIFT) is popular! You definitely will have been here a few times before graduating.
  • Albee’s kitchen (like the one in Campsie). Great serving sizes! Possibly too much noodles. :/
  • Kreta Ayer – Modern Singaporean Cuisine. IMHO much Malaysian influence, but of course! The lunch special here is that you get a free drink (four choices of the “sugary tea” type). But the price of the drink, really, is included in the dish price, around ~$11.50 (Nasi Goreng, could not finish all the rice) to maybe $13 for Char Kuey Teow.
  • You can also have Japanese Ramen… but for $11+ and above, I don’t think it’s worth. (Not much ingredients!) IMHO much better Ramen at China Town.
  • There is fusion of Japanese/Korean restraunt. Seen my lecturer here lol.
  • Italian ($10 lunch meal deal)
  • The rest is, well, mostly just Chinese food.

Eating in lectures?

Pending on my timetable, sometimes I just eat my own lunch during the lecture, or in between algebra and calculus – “you can’t think on an empty stomach”. Like most people who ignore the no eating/smoking/switch off phone signs placed in every room. This is also what I tell new students.

Just don’t be too loud – don’t be eating from microwavable glassware and metal utensils unless you want the lecturer to tell you off! True story!

save money.

Clearly, most of the food on offer is not really healthy for daily consumption. So, food from home?

  • Maybe you’ve got some international friends’ place to crash
  • Can of tuna and two pieces of bread == sandwhich
  • etc.

Microwaves.

UNSW has microwaves free-of-charge! Map. There  microwaves for student use are scattered around campus, and even more microwaves can be found hidden in school buildings. Like K17, 3rd floor.

Deals.

There’s an app called Loocol which connects students to deals for food on UNSW campus. I believe Loocol itself is a UNSW joint. Download the app from loocl.com. My friend has had success with it, ordering a $5 pide one morning.

In other news, have you heard about the UNSW phoSOC?
