When my dad first bought the iPad 2, he thought is was the most amazing thing ever. Now it is just _screaming_ to be replaced – the system software is extremely sluggish (constantly lagging), unresponsive, or apps just plain crashing.

Here’s a table (sourced from http://colourclassicfaq.com/mobo/mystic.shtml) which describes the system software versions for ye ol’ 1993 Apple Mac Classic:

iOS software versions table

Strikingly, this table resembles the state of affairs of iOS on the iPad 2… even the 7, 8.0, 8.1 version numbers line up, funnily enough! The big difference here is that choosing your system version is not possible on the iPad _– downgrading iOS is blocked by Apple_ (partly for security reasons)!

In summary, upgrading your system software on the Mac Classic

  • lets you run newer software
  • reduces stability, and/or speed

…matching exactly with upgrading your iOS version:

  • lets you run iOS 8 only software
  • reduces stability and speed

In both cases, it’s time to buy new hardware.
